Using smaller-than-room-size rugs to highlight particular areas in a room can be challenging if not daunting, due to several subjective factors that affect the choice of rugs and their placement. However, as in many instances there are 'rules' or norms that may be followed when placing rugs in a room. Some of these are the following:
In the sala or large room, a rug can be used as the centerpoint for a few chairs and a small table to create a cozy 'corner' in a. A 4' x 6' or 5' x 7' hexagonal or round rug of low-key pattern and lighter color will be appropriate. Usually at least the front legs of the chairs are placed on the rug to have the feet of sitting people on the rug also. However, the rear legs of the chairs may also be on the rug if the rug is large, but do not let more than two feet of the rug extend behind the rear legs.
Before buying a rug for a dining table, measure the table top and add at
least two feet all around (up to 30 inches) to get the minimum size of
the rug. This will allow the person to move the chair back or forward
without the chair legs being off the rug. If the legs get off the rug
when it is moved back, the chair legs may push the rug edge up when the
chair is pushed forward, creating a possible trip hazard for the person.
Thus, most preferable dining room rugs extend to the rear legs of all
chairs surrounding the table.
